Tata Motors Ltd.'s Jaguar Land Rover unit will add an engine-making facility at its new vehicle assembly plant in Changshu, China, in about two years, according to the Financial Times, which cites unidentified sources.
The Chinese factory is a 50:50 joint venture with Chery Automobile Co. It began pilot operations in April and will launch full production at the end of the year.
The newspaper says the facility's engine operations will start in 2016. Until then, JLR will import engines from the U.K. The new line will be the company's first engine plant outside England.
The 10.9 billion-yuan ($1.8 billion) Changshu complex has capacity to make 130,000 cars and SUVs per year. JLR said previously the factory initially will assemble Land Rover Freelander or Range Rover Evoque SUVs, then add Jaguar cars and eventually a Chinese-brand model.
