Johnson Controls Inc. has officially launched production at its new $154 million starter-battery plant in Chongqing, China.
The 1.4 million-sq-ft (133,000 sq-meter) facility has capacity to make 6 million lead-acid batteries annually. It joins JCI's battery factory in Changxing, which has annual capacity to make 8 million batteries.
JCI has supplied the Chinese automotive market with starter batteries since 2005. The company is planning a third, $200 million battery plant for northern China that would add another 6 million units of capacity a few years from now.
JCI operates a battery development and test center in Shanghai, where the company is building a new China headquarters.
