A dozen officials from Japan’s transport ministry swept through Suzuki Motor Corp. headquarters earlier today as they investigate falsified quality inspection reports, says The Japan Times.
The raid and interviews of senior executives follows Suzuki’s announced plan to recall 29 models and 2 million vehicles, a record high for a single campaign in Japan, whose brake systems were incorrectly certified.
An investigation by an independent panel reported last week that the certifications were either falsified or conducted by unqualified Suzuki employees between 1981 and last January. The report also notes that those practices continued after Suzuki admitted last August to wrongdoing.
Suzuki says it has booked a special charge of 80 billion yen ($715 million) in the fiscal year ended March 31 to cover the callback and re-inspections.
