Jaguar Land Rover and partner Chery Automobile Co. have begun testing stamping and body shop operations at their 10.9 billion-yuan ($1.8 billion) factory in Changshu, China.

The facility, which has capacity to make 130,000 cars and SUVs annually, is on schedule to begin normal production in the fourth quarter, according to the partners.

JLR said earlier that the factory will begin making the Land Rover Freelander or Range Rover Evoque SUVs, then add Jaguar cars and eventually models for a China-specific brand. Last year the company's sales climbed 30% to 95,200 vehicles.

The Changshu complex includes an R&D center and an engine plant. The facility is run by Chery Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Co. Ltd., a 50:50 venture between Chery and JLR.
