India’s transport minister says the government would rather shield million of jobs for taxi and truck drivers than encourage self-driving technologies.
Minister Nitin Gadkari tells reporters the trend to autonomous vehicles may be impossible to ignore in future years. But for now, he declares, “We shouldn’t allow it.”
Gadkari adds that the government is in the early states of developing its own ride-hailing platform and app—similar in concept to Ola and Uber—to help increase employment opportunities.
His assertion comes as a report by consultant Accenture says artificial intelligence (AI) could boost economic growth by roughly 50% for countries that adopt such technologies. The firm says AI’s biggest impact will come in information and communications, manufacturing, wholesale and retail, and transportation.
Accenture estimates AI could hike labor productivity in tech-savvy Singapore 41% by 2035, a bigger gain than for any of the other 33 countries it analyzed.
