The Indian government aims to help develop the country’s fledgling electric car industry by lowering its import tariffs on EV components to 15% from 30%.

The plan, which took effect on Jan. 30, also reduces duties to 10% for knocked-down powertrain kits that include the battery, motor, brakes and power control system ready to be mounted on a chassis.

India hopes to put 1 million electrified vehicles on the road by 2023. The government also has set ambitious goals to electrifying all public transport and 40% of new personal vehicles by 2030.
