Hyundai Motor Co. says it will begin selling a new fuel cell-powered crossover vehicle next year that can drive 580 km (360 miles) per tank of hydrogen.
The company unveiled the yet-to-be-named model in near-production form at an event in Seoul earlier today. The car picks up design features from the FE Concept Hyundai revealed in March at the Geneva auto show.
The car’s technology significantly outperforms Hyundai’s third-generation system, which powers the Tucson fuel cell SUV. The new powertrain is 20% more powerful and 9% more efficient and features a 161-hp electric motor.
Hyundai says the new crossover will debut in South Korea in early 2018, then go on sale in Europe, the U.S. and Australia in the second half of the year. The model is the latest in a barrage of “green” models Hyundai intends to introduce by 2020.
