Hyundai Motor Co. has been sued in Seoul by 1,500 owners of its diesel-powered Santa Fe SUVs, who claim the company overstated the fuel efficiency of the vehicles.
The lawsuit covers models produced between May 2012 and June 2014. The law firm handling the complaint tells Bloomberg News it hopes to attract 10,000 affected customers. The lawsuit seeks damages of 1.5 million won ($1,500) per plaintiff.
Hyundai and its Kia Motors affiliate spent $395 million to settle a similar issue in the U.S. two years ago. The Environmental Protection Agency said the companies exaggerated the fuel efficiency of several gasoline-powered models from the 2011-2013 model years.
