Hyundai Motor Co. has decided scrap plans to add a diesel option to its Santa Fe crossover vehicle in the U.S. early next decade.
Consumer studies indicates no demand for a diesel-powered crossover in the U.S., company officials tell Green Car Reports. The publication says the company now is considering a plug-in hybrid variant of the Santa Fe.
The diesel had been expected to be a long-wheelbase version of the Santa Fe with three rows of seating. Plans for the stretched Santa Fe also have been canceled.
Currently the Santa Fe is available in the U.S. with two rows of seats and a choice of a 2.0- or 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. In Europe, Hyundai offers two diesel engines in the midsize crossover.
Earlier this year Hyundai’s Kia affiliate killed plans for a diesel-powered version of its Sorrento crossover vehicle, which shares a platform with the Santa Fe. But Kia recently launched a mild-hybrid diesel variant of the Sportage crossover in Europe.
