Hyundai Motor Co.'s Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center Inc. and partner Mojo Mobility Inc. are moving into the final phase of a joint program to develop a wireless system to quickly recharge electric vehicles. The project is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.
During the first two phases, the companies developed a fast-charging wireless power transfer system using Mojo Mobility's near-field power technology and optimized it for a Kia Soul EV. The system is more than 85% efficient and is capable of transferring at least 10 kW to the vehicle, even if it isn't precisely aligned with the charger.
The partners plan to gather real-world performance data during the third phase of the project using five Kia Soul EVs at HATCI's facility in Superior Twp., Mich., and Mojo Mobility's complex in Santa Clara, Calif. The evaluation will include testing the system's durability, interoperability, safety and performance.
