Virgin Hyperloop One says it has signed an agreement to develop plans for an ultra-high-speed transit tube system in India that would link Pune with a proposed new airport in Mumbai 100 miles away.
VHO, which is backed by British tycoon Richard Branson, has signed a preliminary deal to conduct a feasibility study. The startup says its goal is to build a demonstration track in India in 2-3 years and complete the line 5-7 years later.
The system is designed to whisk groups of people riding in magnetically levitated, 28-foot-long pods through a tube at speeds of 240 mph or more. VHO and Indian officials envision a system that could complete 150 million passenger trips per year.
The service envisions being able to make the trip between Pune and Mumbai, which takes about 3.5 hours by car, in 25 minutes. VHO is conducting similar feasibility work in Canada, Finland the Netherlands, the UAE and the U.S. The company aims to have the first three of its systems in service by 2021.
