Honda Motor Co. will begin selling diesel-powered vehicles in India next spring when it introduces a Brio mini-sedan with a 1.5-liter oil burner, The Nikkei reports.
The new engine will go into production early next year at Honda's manufacturing complex in Rajasthan, according to the Tokyo-based newspaper.
The move is part of Honda's plan to boost its Indian sales sixfold to 300,000 vehicles by 2016. Diesel engines power a majority of the vehicles sold in India, where government subsidies make the fuel less expensive than gasoline.
