Honda Motor Co. and Panasonic Corp. have formed a joint venture with HPP Energy Indonesia to test a battery-sharing scheme for electric motorcycles.

The partners plan to launch a pilot program in December. The project, which aims to alleviate concerns about driving range limitations and lengthy recharging times, will be partially funded by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization.

As part of the initiative, the joint venture will install charging stations at several dozen locations in three Indonesian cities. The facilities will enable users to exchange depleted Honda Mobile Power Packs for a fully charged one.

Indonesia is the third-largest motorcycle market in the world. To address increasing traffic volume and rising air pollution, the government has launched new electrification initiatives.
