Honda and its Acura brand accounted for seven of the top 15 models on Cars.com’s annual “American-Made” Index, which rates vehicles sold in the U.S. based on final assembly location, parts content and labor rates.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ Jeep Cherokee SUV, which is built in Belvidere, Ill., was deemed the most American vehicle for the second straight year. But Honda accounted for the next three models with the Odyssey minivan, Ridgeline pickup and Passport SUV, all of which are assembled in Lincoln, Ala.
Also making the top 10 were the Acura MDX, Honda Pilot and Acura RDX, which ranked 6th, 7th and 10th, respectively. The high-volume Accord midsize sedan was rated 14th most American.
General Motors placed four vehicles in the top 15, led by the fifth-ranked Chevrolet Corvette. The others were the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups (8th and 9th) and Chevy Camaro (11th).
Two Toyota models made the cut, with the Avalon placing 12th and the Tundra ranked 15th. The F-150 full-size pickup was Ford’s lone entry on the list, taking the 13th position to round out the top 15.
Last year, Cars.com ranked three Ford vehicles among the top 10 American made. In addition to the F-150, the group included the Explorer SUV and Taurus sedan. The latter was discontinued this year, as was another 2018 top 10 model, the Chevy Volt plug-in hatchback.
More than 100 vehicles were evaluated. In addition to where a vehicle is assembled, Cars.com says it takes into account engine and transmission sourcing, other American made content and U.S. factory employment relative to sales.
