Greenpeace environmental activists boarded a ship loaded with 1,200 Volkswagen cars at a port in southeast England today and took keys from other VW vehicles parked in a nearby staging area, Reuters reports.
The activists unfurled a banner that read “Ditch diesel” and depicted a young girl with a respiratory disease. Two remaining protesters say they won’t relinquish several thousand keys they took until the ship returns to Germany, according to Reuters.
VW says most of the cars being delivered were gasoline rather than diesel powered. It also emphasizes that the diesels on board meet the EU’s most recent Euro 6 emission standards.
