Spy photographers caught General Motors Co.’s GMC unit testing a heavily camouflaged compact crossover vehicle in Arizona this week.
The upcoming entry-level model is expected to bow in 2020. Media reports suggest the vehicle will be called the Granite, after a 2010 concept model.
The all-new crossover would be positioned below the current GMC Terrain and compete against the Jeep Renegade, Ford EcoSport, Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3. The GMC model likely will ride on GM’s Gamma-2 platform, which also carries the Buick Encore and Chevrolet Spark and Trax crossovers.
The camouflaged test vehicle appears to sit higher off the ground and have a more rounded-off shape than the 2010 concept (pictured). GMC’s latest front-end styling also is hinted at through the masking.
Power is expected to come from a small turbocharged engine mated with a 6- or 9-speed automatic transmission. A continuously variable transmission also has been rumored.
