General Motors Co. says it will stop marketing its mainstream Chevrolet vehicles in Europe in 2016.
The company will continue to market those models in Russia and Commonwealth of Independent States. GM also will offer specialty models notably its American-made Chevrolet Corvette sports car in Europe.
The Chevy pullback has been prompted by a "challenging business model" and the weak European auto market, according to the company. Analysts note that Chevrolet, most of whose European models are made in South Korea, competes directly against GM's ailing Opel and Vauxhall brands.
Separately, GM is moving forward with plans to broaden its Cadillac luxury car lineup in Europe over the next three years. The Cadillac brand so far has failed to gain traction against entrenched local luxury marques.
