PSA Could Begin Selling Opel Models Outside Europe in 2018

PSA Group says it could begin marketing certain Opel-brand cars outside Europe as soon as next year under terms of its acquisition of the company from General Motors Co.,
The sale, which was announced on Monday, prohibits PSA from selling Opels in markets where GM continues to compete unless the vehicles contain PSA-derived intellectual property. The Financial Times says three unspecified Opel models, which were co-developed by GM and PSA under a 5-year-old partnership, would qualify.
PSA CEO Carlos Tavares tells the British newspaper that the trio of cars represent about 20% of Opel sales in Europe. He adds that all three would need to be modified somewhat to meet local regulations in other markets.
Tavares rules out the U.S. as an immediate target. But he describes “huge potential” to sell Opel-branded models in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
