General Motors Co. plans to shut down its hydrogen fuel-cell R&D center in Honeoye Fall, N.Y., and consolidate those operations with its GM Powertrain engine and transmission research unit in Pontiac, Mich., early next year.
GM has operated the fuel-cell research facilities in Honeoye Falls for more than a decade. The 130,000-sq-ft complex once employed roughly 300 engineers and researchers. Most of the employees there will be offered the option of relocating to Pontiac, according to the company.
In May The Detroit News said GM intended to reassign but not move the remaining 60 fuel cell researchers there to GM Powertrain under a broad restructuring of the company's global R&D operations.
