General Motors Co. plans to add a third shift at its assembly plant in Gravatai, Brazil, late next month when it adds production of an unidentified new sedan.
The facility currently builds the Chevrolet Celta and Onix low-priced subcompacts.
GM says it will hire 1,450 workers at the Gravatai factory for the new shift. The company also will add 180 employees at the $172 million powertrain plant it opened in Brazil late last year.
Under a plan unveiled in 2009, GM invested $1 billion to develop the Onix and boost annual capacity in Gravatai to 380,000 vehicles from 230,000 units. The company didn't say whether the third shift would further increase capacity there.
