General Motors Co. says it will shift production of batteries for the 2015 Chevrolet Spark minicar to its fabrication facility in Brownstown, Mich.
Batteries for the 2014 Spark were supplied by A123 Systems Inc., which went bankrupt in 2012 and was reorganized as A123 Systems LLC by new Chinese owner Wanxiang Group Corp.
GM says the Brownstown facility will make a redesigned, 19-kWh version of the Spark battery that consists of of 192 lithium-ion cells. The system weighs 474 lbs, making it 86 lbs lighter than the battery in this year's Spark. GM says the update won't change the Spark's gasoline equivalent rating of 119 MPGe or alter its 82-mile range.
GM sells the Spark EV only in California and Oregon. The company describes the $20,000 car as the least expensive electric car on the market.
