Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority has created a team to investigate whether Volkswagen AG's cheating on U.S. emission laws for diesels occurred in Germany and elsewhere in Europe, Bloomberg News reports.
Chancellor Angela Merkel urged "full transparency" from VW to quickly reveal the facts behind the cheating. Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt says the government's investigation will include procuring documents and interviewing company executives.
The growing crisis has produced an outcry in Germany that the scandal will damage Germany's all-important auto industry and hurt the country's economy. Political leaders described VW's admission of guilt as "shocking" and said it has "gravely damaged" the German auto industry and its central role in the country's export business.
