Hyundai Motor Co.’s upscale Genesis unit plans to use smaller headlights in future vehicles to reflect the move toward autonomous driving.
The trend was previewed with the thin quad-LED lights on the GV80 Concept SUV that was unveiled last week at the New York auto show. A nearly identical production version—including the light treatment—of the midsize crossover/SUV is expected to be launched next year.
All Genesis vehicles eventually will get LED quad headlights, Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis’ chief designer, tells Motoring. He says the luxury brand is reducing the size of headlights in anticipation of fully autonomous vehicles, which will use lidar, radar and other sensors to navigate in the dark. But these sensors may take on the look of small vestigial headlights like the ones on the GV80 as decorative design cues, Donckerwolke predicts.
