General Motors Co. is preparing to recall 40,900 vehicles produced between 2007 and 2009 to fix a faulty plastic fuel pump part that could crack and cause a fire.
The campaign is for models sold in hot-weather states. But GM says it also is offering free repairs if the component fails within 10 years or 120,000 miles in most of the affected vehicles sold or registered in other states. The recall covers:
2007 Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent crossover vehicles and Chevy Cobalt, Pontiac G5 and Saturn Ion sedans in Arizona, California, Nevada and Texas
2008 Chevy Cobalt and Pontiac G5 cars in Arizona
2009 Chevy Cobalts and Pontiac G5s in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas
If the part cracks, owners may notice a gasoline odor or see fuel dripping on the ground. GM says it is not aware of any fires caused by the defect.
