France's interior ministry has ordered a nationwide ban on UberPOP, the low-cost ride-hailing service offered by Uber Technologies Inc., after protests by conventional taxi operators turned violent on Thursday.

France's interior ministry has ordered a nationwide ban on UberPOP, the low-cost ride-hailing service offered by Uber Technologies Inc., after protests by conventional taxi operators turned violent on Thursday.
UberPOP uses private drivers who don't have costly taxi licenses, resulting in lower rates for riders. A French law that took effect in January prohibits such drivers from carrying paying customers. Earlier this week the government described UberPOP as illegal but urged protesters to "let the justice system do its job."
Uber is challenging the the new statute. It claims Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve has overstepped his authority in banning UberPOP ahead of a court ruling on the law.
