Uber Technologies Inc. has hired former Ford Motor Co. engineering executive Sherif Marakby to the newly created position of vice president of global vehicle programs.

The California-based ride-hailing company has hired several engineers and managers with automotive experience over the last year as it works to develop autonomous vehicle technologies.

Marakby most recently was Ford’s director of global electrical and electronic systems engineering. He previously led teams that developed several of Ford’s hybrid vehicles.

At Uber, Marakby will be based at the company’s Pittsburgh headquarters, reporting to Brian McClendon, Uber’s vice president of advanced technologies. McClendon was poached from Google Inc.’s autonomous vehicle unit last year.
