Ford Motor Co. plans to invest $1.1 billion to retool and expand its assembly plant in Claycomo, Mo., to increase output of the popular F-150 fullsize pickup truck and launch production of the latest generation of the Ford Transit large van.
The company expects to boost the workforce at the factory outside Kansas City by 2,000 workers to a total of 4,450 by year-end. About 1,000 of the workers will be hired at the entry-level wage of about $15.80 per hour, or slightly more than half the pay of veteran workers.
Ford will add 900 employees in the third quarter when it adds a third F-Series shift. Sales of the truck jumped 19% year over year to 36,600 units in January through April.
In the fourth quarter, the company will hire an additional 1,100 employees to prepare to begin building the Transit next year. The Transit is currently made in Turkey for sale outside the U.S. and Canada. In North America the new model will eventually replace Ford's E-Series van.
