Ford Motor Co.’s 2016 model F-150 SuperCab pickup truck is the only one of seven fullsize pickups to earn a top “good” rating in the latest batch of difficult "small overlap" crash tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Last year the same model was rated “marginal” in the test, which shows what happens when only the left front quarter of a vehicle clips an object. This year’s improved result helped the F-150 model earn the only “good” overall rating among the trucks tested.
Three other pickups earned “acceptable” ratings in the batch tested. They are the Toyota Tundra Double Cab and the Chevrolet Silverado 1500/GMC Sierra Double Cab twins.
IIHs rated five pickups “marginal” overall: the Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab twins, Toyota Tundra CrewMax, Ram 1500 Quad Cab and Ram 1500 Crew Cab.
