Ford Motor Co. says the diesel version of its 2018 F-150 fullsize pickup truck will have a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency combined fuel efficiency rating of 25 mpg (22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway).

The carmaker boasts that the F-150’s EPA-estimated ratings are best-in-class for a fullsize pickup. Mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the truck’s 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel generates 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque.

The vehicle, Ford’s first diesel-powered F-150, is due in dealerships next month. The truck’s 11,400-lb towing capacity and 2,020-lb payload also are said to be best-in-class for a diesel-powered light-duty pickup.

Currently the only other fullsize pickup with a diesel option is Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s Ram 1500 truck. That vehicle’s 3.0-liter V-6 diesel gets 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, resulting in a combined EPA rating of 23 mpg.

The all-new 2019 Ram due this autumn is expected to include a new diesel engine. General Motors also plans to add diesel variants to its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups.
