Ford Motor Co. is forming a new division within its research and advanced engineering group to explore advances in robotics and artificial intelligence, according to Chief Technology Officer Ken Washington.
He says in a blog posted on Thursday that the new team will conduct research in such areas as sensors, machine learning, personal mobility devices and aerial robotics, including drones.
Ford will be able to devote more resources to those areas because it has turned over responsibility for developing the autonomous driving platform it plans to debut in 2021 to Argo AI. Ford agreed in February to invest $1 billion over five years in the Pittsburgh-based startup, which was formed late last year.
Argo is operating as a Ford subsidiary but with startup-like independence. The company promises to deliver an automated system capable of level 4 autonomy. That means technology that can drive a vehicle at least as well as a human can under almost any operating condition.
