Ford Motor Co. is introducing an all-new version of its Explorer-based Interceptor Utility police vehicle with a hybrid-electric powertrain.

The new model is the first pursuit-rated hybrid SUV, according to Ford. The carmaker already offers pursuit-rated hybrid versions of its Fusion sedan and F-150 pickup police vehicles, plus a non-pursuit-rated plug-in hybrid Fusion police car.

Ford estimates the hybrid police Explorer will have an Environmental Protection Agency fuel efficiency rating of at least 24 mpg. This would make it 40% more efficient than the current Interceptor SUV, which is powered by a 3.7-liter V-6 engine, and could cut annual fuel costs by $3,200.

Ford says the hybrid system also reduces engine idling time to save fuel when the vehicle is stationary. The new Interceptor SUV also accelerates faster and has a higher top speed than current V-6-only model. The truck’s lithium-ion battery can be used to power auxiliary equipment, such as the lights and computer systems.

The hybrid Police Interceptor Utility will debut next summer. A consumer version of the hybrid Explorer also is expected.

Ford says the current Police Interceptor Utility vehicle accounts for 65% of the police vehicle market in the U.S.
