Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV reportedly intends to phase out diesel options for all its passenger vehicles by 2022.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV reportedly intends to phase out diesel options for all its passenger vehicles by 2022.
Sources tell the Financial Times the plan will be announced on June 1. The newspaper notes that Porsche said last week it will phase out diesels, and Toyota said last year it was unlikely to add new models with diesel power.
Demand for diesels has been shrinking since Volkswagen AG’s diesel emission cheating scandal focused global attention on nitrogen oxides pollution. Diesel sales in Europe, which had been above 50% of the total market, dropped eight points to less than 44% last year, according to JATO Dynamics Ltd.
About 41% of cars sold by FCA in Europe last year were diesels, up slightly from the ratio in 2016. More than half the company’s European sales are in Italy, where demand for diesels remains relatively high.
