A federal judge in San Francisco says he intends to appoint compensation expert Ken Feinberg to help reach a settlement on a U.S. Dept. of Justice claim that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV used illegal software to meet diesel emission standards.
Judge Edward Chen has given participants until Wednesday to file objections to Feinberg’s selection.
FCA proposes a software update to fix the affected 2014-2016 models and also to certify 2017 model diesels for sale in the U.S. The Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board continue to review the plan.
Feinberg most recently managed the program that in 2014-2015 paid compensation covering victims of faulty General Motors Co. ignition switches that killed 124 people and seriously injured 275 others.
