Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV says it will invest more than $1 billion and create 1,000 new jobs at its assembly plants in Toledo, Ohio, and Belvidere, Ill., to bolster output of its Jeep brand SUVs.
The bulk of the investment, $700 million, will go to FCA’s Toledo North facility to expand capacity and prepare to build the next-generation Jeep Wrangler. The facility will account for 700 of the new jobs.
The remaining $350 million will be used to move production of the Jeep Cherokee SUV from Toledo to Belvidere next year. The three models currently built at Belvidere—the Dodge Dart compact car and Jeep Compass and Patriot crossover/SUVs—will be phased out by year-end. The two small Jeeps SUVs will be replaced by a single model that will be made in Toluca, Mexico, starting next year.
