Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is recalling 5,700 of its Fiat 500E electric minicars in the U.S. to remedy incompatible software that could cause the cars with low battery power to shut down prematurely.
The campaign covers most 500Es in the U.S., where the $32,000 car is being marketed in California and Oregon.
FCA says the problem resulted when it added a "limp home" mode that enables the car to extend its range. The software update to the car's battery controller wasn't recognized by the car's main vehicle control unit, which shut down the powertrain entirely with no warning to the driver.
The company notes that the flaw may cut power to the traction motor, but it won't affect operation of the vehicle's brakes, steering and safety systems.
