Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is investing $500 million to prepare its assembly plant in Cordoba, Argentina, for an undisclosed new model to be sole-sourced there, Reuters reports.
Most of the spending will be to retool the 227,200 sq-meter factory for a new modular platform to carry the vehicle. FCA says production will begin in the second half of 2017, with about 80% of output exported to other Latin American markets.
The Cordoba factory, which opened in 1995, has annual capacity to build 105,000 Palio superminis and Siena small sedan variants, according to FCA. Cordoba also assembles transmissions.
