FCA May Delay Diesel Phase-Out in Europe

CEO Mike Manley says Fiat Chrysler Automobiles may not drop diesels in Europe by 2022 as previously pledged if demand is still strong enough to keep them.
That target is “flexible,” Manley tells the Financial Times. Diesels commanded half the European new-car market four years ago. The ratio has dropped to about one-third in the wake of the Volkswagen diesel emission cheating scandal in 2015. Demand continues to plummet in most of the region’s major markets.
But Manley says FCA won’t eliminate all diesel options in 2022 if doing so would mean losing 15% or more volume for specific models. He says diesel sales have dropped sharply for small cars but remain stable for SUVs and large sedans.
Manley notes that pickup trucks classified as commercial vehicles will retain their diesel options as originally planned.
