Fiat India Automobiles Ltd. (FIAL) has signed a deal to supply a combined 220,000 diesel engines over three years to local producers Maruti Suzuki India and Tata Motors.
The unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV builds variants of the Tata Bolt, a mini five-door hatch and Fiat brand Punto superminis and Linea compact sedans at its factory in Ranjangaon. Demand for its own models' cars has been weak.
Under the engine deal, FIAL’s Ranjangaon facility will supply Maruti Suzuki through 2020 with 150,000 4-cylinder, 1.3-liter MultiJet engines for the Indian carmaker’s Dzire and Ciaz small sedans, Ignis five-door hatch, Swift mini-hatchback and Vitara Brezza mini-crossover. The deal extends a 2012 agreement in which FIAL provided Maruti Suzuki with 100,000 of the same engine model.
FIAL also will supply 70,000 of its 2.0-liter MultiJet diesels to Tata during the next three years. Tata will use the engines to power its upcoming Q501 and Q501 premium SUVs, which will share a platform with Tata’s Land Rover unit.
