Maruti Suzuki India says it suspended work for one day over the past weekend at its largest assembly plant in India. The move is intended to reduce excess vehicle stockpiles and adjust Maruti's mix of gasoline- and diesel-powered models.
The affected factory in Gurgaon produces about 3,000 gasoline-powered vehicles per day. Production has not been curbed at the company's other assembly plant in India, which builds roughly 2,000 small gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles daily.
India's sales of gasoline models have plunged in recent months, in part because the soaring cost of that fuel. Diesel vehicles haven't been hit as hard because of government fuel subsidies.
