Austria’s transport ministry says several European diesel makers have agree to update the emission control software in 600,000 of their diesels in the country.
Manufacturers also will offer an array of incentives for owners of older diesels who scrap their cars and buy cleaner-running new models. The scheme is part of a regional European initiative announced earlier this month to lower nitrogen oxides emissions from 5.3 million pre-Euro 5 era diesels by as much s 30%.
The ministry says Mercedes, Renault, Volkswagen and perhaps BMW have agreed to install software upgrades. Nine others—Audi, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, Opel, SEAT, Skoda and Porsche—will offer scrappage incentives only.
Further discussions between the ministry and carmakers will determine the amount of incentives. Also undecided is whether some carmakers may also make hardware updates to their diesels.
