The European Commission says it expects to meet today with Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, to determine how many diesel vehicles the company sold in Europe that were fitted with software that defeated their emission controls.

The EC notes that such software is specifically banned under eight-year-old EU rules that member nations are expected to enforce. As in the U.S. and elsewhere, the law empowers companies to levy fines and suspend sales when carmakers violate the legislation.

The EU aims to tighten current emission certification procedures by autumn 2017 in an effort to reduce the gap between test and real-world results.
