Eaton Corp. says its new polymer air-conditioning conveyance system provides weight, cost and performance benefits over traditional aluminum and rubber air-conditioning lines.
The thermoplastic composite design requires 40% fewer components than current A/C lines and can cut costs by as much as 15%, according to Eaton.
Weight savings are estimated to be between 20% and 50%. The material also is said to be less susceptible to heat transfer and gas leaks, easier to recycle and allows for greater packaging flexibility. In addition, the system’s snap-in-place installation eliminates the need to screw lines into the system.
Eaton says it has won a contract for the system with an unnamed carmaker. Production is due to start in 2019.
