The U.S. Dept. of Transportation is rolling out a new software tool to help transportation system designers create test beds for connected-vehicle systems.

A preliminary version of the software, dubbed SET-IT (systems engineering tool for intelligent transportation), can be downloaded HERE. The tool requires Microsoft Word or Excel and a 32-bit version of Visio 2010 or 2013.

The "alpha" release combines the database and drawing tools of the Connected Vehicle Reference Implementation Architecture. CVRIA helps standardize intelligent transportation system planning by enabling developers to set up connected-vehicle environments that can be integrated with the National ITS Architecture.

Developers say future versions of SET-IT will add hierarchical modeling, enterprise and communications views and links between views.
