Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao is scheduled to present revised guidelines today for developers and sellers of autonomous vehicles.
She will detail the strategy in Ann Arbor, Mich., at the University of Michigan’s MCity test facility for self-driving systems.
The new guidance is expected to largely follow initial procedures suggested last year by the Obama administration. That includes a list of design and safety elements that developers should bake into their self-driving-vehicle technologies. The Trump administration guidance also will apply to more advanced Level 3-Level 5 autonomous systems.
Observers say the question of federal regulations for autonomous systems will be covered by pending bills in Congress.
DOT’s overall aim remains the same: to encourage development and testing of systems that enable cars to drive themselves, while asking states to refrain from setting their own performance or safety rules on such work. Reports says Chao will suggest states focus on such matters as liability and insurance for autonomous vehicles.
