U.S. Dept. of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao says the federal government’s third round of guidelines for autonomous vehicles will be flexible and tech neutral.
In a speech on Sunday ahead of the Detroit auto show, Chao declared the government won’t pick winners or losers, champion one technology over another or adopt a “command and control” approach to regulations for robotic vehicles.
She also says the new guidance also will deal with barriers to the use of autonomous vehicle control systems in trucks, transit systems and other transportation modes. Chao reiterates that DOT’s primary interest in the technology is to save lives.
