Denso Corp. and Toshiba Corp. are working together on an artificial intelligence technology to help self-driving cars identify and analyze images.
The joint development program will build on technologies each company has been developing on its own. The companies expect the resulting deep neural network (DNN) algorithm to perform recognition processing as accurately as, or better than, the human brain.
DNN will allow vehicle computers to extract and learn the characteristics of various objects as they are identified rather than relying solely on comparing images against a preloaded database of images. This will significantly improve the accuracy of the system, according to the partners.
In addition to object detection, DNN is expected to extract more information about pedestrians, road markings and other objects and environmental situations. This includes recognizing whether a pedestrian is carrying a smartphone and how a vehicle can use this to share information.
The companies say the technology will be compatible with multiple network configurations. They also are working to integrate the platform with in-vehicle processors that are smaller and consume less power than today’s units.
