Next year Europeans will be able to retrofit most vehicles as old as 17 years with a telematics system that records driving history, issues alerts when the car needs servicing and provides such remote services as vehicle tracking, speed monitoring and low battery voltage.
Delphi Automotive plc debuted the cloud-based plug-and-play system, called Delphi Connect, in the U.S. in January.
Like that system, the European iteration connects to the vehicle through its on-board diagnostics port. Services, which are delivered wirelessly, are managed remotely through a Web portal or an Android or Apple smartphone app.
The system is designed in part so parents or fleet operators can monitor vehicles driven by others. For example, the service can generate alerts about excessive engine rpm, high vehicle speed and if the vehicle is driven beyond a predetermined geographic area.
Delphi unveiled the European system earlier this week at the Frankfurt auto show.
