Delphi Automotive plc this week demonstrated a 48-volt mild-hybrid system in a Honda Civic that it says reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 10% and boosts low-end torque 25% over traditional vehicles.

The supplier says it is working with two unnamed carmakers on possible production applications that could be launched within 18 months.

In the Civic, Delphi teamed a supplemental 48-volt battery with a 1.6-liter diesel engine and a standard 12-volt battery. The company revealed no other details.

Delphi notes that mild hybrid architectures can be configured in several ways. The 48-volt battery can be used as a start-stop system and to power various accessories, including the heating and cooling system.

Delphi predicts that 10% of new vehicles sold will be equipped with 48-volt mild-hybrid systems by 2025.
