Daimler AG and partner Beijing Automotive Industry Corp. say they will spend about €1 billion ($1.4 billion) to at least double annual capacity at their Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in Beijing by the end of 2015.
The expansion will hike the factory's yearly capacity to more than 200,000 vehicles and 250,000 engines. Daimler says the facility could be enlarged again if demand warrants. Mercedes sales in China climbed 57% in January-February compared with the same period in 2013.
The plant, which is operated by Beijing Benz Automotive Co., currently makes C-Class and E-Class sedans and midsize GLK crossover vehicles. The complex will add production of the GLA small crossover next year.
