Daimler AG plans to pay owners of its older diesel models in Germany €3,000 ($3,400) to upgrade the emission control systems on their vehicles.

The subsidy targets urban areas of Germany where diesels could face driving bans because of their impact on air quality. Stuttgart, for one, began banning older diesels in April.

Germany’s transport ministry issued a 30-page guideline last December to help aftermarket suppliers win regulatory approvals for their systems.

Daimler has set up a website to process applications, Reuters reports. The news service says the first of the retrofits will be for relatively clean Euro 5 diesels.
